About This Role
The Fiber Optic Splicing Crew performs the highly specialized work of splicing, terminating, and testing single-mode and multi-mode fiber optic cables for both inside plant (ISP) and outside plant (OSP) deployments. These technicians operate precision fusion splicers and OTDR test equipment to build and certify fiber backbone networks that interconnect buildings, data centers, and campus environments. Their craftsmanship directly determines the performance and reliability of every high-bandwidth connection.
Key Responsibilities

Perform fusion splicing of single-mode (OS2) and multi-mode (OM3/OM4/OM5) fiber optic cables with splice loss consistently below 0.05 dB

Conduct OTDR testing, optical power meter/light source testing, and document results per TIA-568 and client acceptance criteria

Prepare fiber cables for splicing: strip, clean, and cleave fibers using proper techniques and consumables

Install and manage splice enclosures, fiber distribution panels (FDPs), splice trays, and fiber termination shelves

Terminate fiber connectors (SC, LC, MPO/MTP) using both fusion splice pigtails and mechanical/epoxy polish methods
06
Perform outside plant (OSP) fiber work including aerial, underground, and direct-buried cable installations and splice closures

Create detailed splice records, fiber route documentation, OTDR trace files, and as-built drawings for project turnover
Qualifications
What We're Looking For
Required
Minimum 3-5 years of hands-on experience in fiber optic splicing and testing (single-mode and multi-mode)
Expert-level proficiency with fusion splicers (Fujikura, FITEL/Furukawa, Sumitomo) and OTDR test equipment (EXFO, Viavi/JDSU, AFL)
Thorough understanding of fiber optic theory: light propagation, attenuation, dispersion, reflectance, and connector loss budgets
Experience with both ISP and OSP fiber applications
OSHA 10 certification; OSHA 30 preferred for lead splicing technicians
Valid driver's license; CDL a plus for OSP splicing truck operations
Preferred
BICSI Installer 2 (INST2) with copper and fiber specialization or BICSI Technician certification
FOA (Fiber Optic Association) CFOT (Certified Fiber Optic Technician) certification
ETA International Fiber Optic Installer (FOI) certification
Experience with ribbon fiber splicing, high-count fiber cables (144-864 strand), and data center fiber deployment

Physical Requirements

Ability to work in manholes, handholes, aerial bucket trucks, rooftops, data center aisles, and cramped splice vaults2
Fine motor dexterity and steady hands required for precision fiber cleaving and splicing; good close-up vision (corrected acceptable)3
Ability to sit/stand for extended periods during splicing, lift up to 50 lbs, and work in outdoor conditions (heat, cold, rain for OSP)Employment Options
